I hired Roto-Rooter for water mitigation services after a sewer clog caused water to overflow into my home. I signed a water mitigation agreement with the understanding that they would perform mitigation and cleanup services related to the water damage.
To my surprise, Roto-Rooter later performed plumbing repairs that I never authorized and subsequently billed me $1,506 for those repairs. My insurance company declined payment because my policy does not cover repairs, only the mitigation-related services. Even they knows that repairs are not covered in a insurance claim
What is particularly concerning is that their own agreement states:
“If we encounter hidden or unforeseen conditions that require additional work, we will promptly notify you, and you can decide whether to add work by a written change order.”
I was never notified of any additional repair work, nor was I presented with or asked to sign any written change order authorizing those repairs. Additionally, I was informed that the agreement was for mitigation services, yet repair work was performed without my approval.
Now, despite my repeated explanation that I never authorized these repairs, Roto-Rooter is demanding payment and has stated that the matter may be sent to the Legal ( Collection Agency ) if I do not pay.
In my opinion, performing work without a customer’s authorization and then seeking payment afterward is extremely unprofessional. Customers should carefully review all paperwork and ensure that any additional work is approved in writing before it is performed.
Based on my experience, I would urge anyone considering Roto-Rooter to exercise caution and make sure they fully understand what work is being authorized and what documentation exists for any additional services.

We had a dead water heater and were trying to get estimates and help to get our problem solved. The dispatching person at Roto Rooter arranged for someone to come out within the hour, and the service tech Norman came promptly. He was thorough, kind and professional and quickly cleared up misinformation we had been given regarding conventional water heaters versus tankless. Even though we were able to get help from a dear friend who is a contractor to get the work done at a very low cost by an excellent contractor, Norman and the service folks at Roto Rooter were excellent and stood out compared to other companies we contacted. I would absolutely consider using them for future work.

On a Saturday evening I had no warm water. Called Roto-Rooter an was serviced the next day and got a new water heater. I did not expect service this quickly. David T. (#8899) was friendly, as professional and efficient as anyone ever was. Also showed me his work and invited me to call with concerns. He made his business look fantastic.
